Pelagic Records release SOM's new album, The Shape of Everything, which follows on from their spring 2021 Awake EP and cover of Billie Eilish’s 'Everything I Wanted'. Their sound has been described as "doom pop"... The Shape of Everything gets off to a promising start with 'Moment' a love letter to '70s / '80s rock. This is a vibe that permeates through the album's 8 songs (34 min, 10 sec). But then a deeper, more modern sound starts to shine through and it's the beautiful clashing of these two styles that gives the band their unique edge. "Doom pop", I think, is a pretty faithful description of what SOM produce. The vocals, while spot on, don't seem important as all of the instruments are meshed together into a cacophony of noise. The mix is phenomenally well handled with everything feeling like it's been slammed together. It's almost dream-like in its presentation. This is one of those releases where you'll find it hard to dislike any of the tracks. They're similar enough to breed familiarity, whilst being diverse enough to really grab you on every single song. 8 Nick Smithson Buy this item online
