The documentary Territoires d’Amour et d’Art delves into the intimate and creative daily life of a couple of painters who have shared their existence for more than fifty years: Maryvonne and Jean Pierre Garrault. Maximilien Mathevon's original score for the documentary is released via Plaza Mayor Company Ltd...

I've long been a fan of the music of composer John Barry, in particular his work for the James Bond movies of the '60s-'80s. Maximilien Mathevon's work on Territoires d’Amour et d’Art immediately brought to mind Barry at his best. 'Mont Beuvrais' and 'L'Exposition' certainly have the spirit of Barry stamped on them.

Over the course of these 13 tracks (30 min, 08 sec) Mathevon builds a subtle, multi-layered score that builds beautifully, interweaving themes and set pieces to present a wonderfully emotive soundscape. The focus on separate instruments really helps the themes stand out, making for a very memorable experience.

The music of Territoires d’Amour et d’Art is intimate and spare, highlighting the sounds of solo instruments: flute, harp, piano or Kantele. It’s music is designed to be minimalist, as close as possible to the very intimate story of the two artists and their works. It is also a thematic score where everyone has their own theme and instruments.

I've been a huge fan of Mathevon's work over the years... and this is my new favourite score of his. A delight from start to finish.
