Regreso Al Amor from accordion virtuoso Anton Stachev celebrates the pioneering work and legacy of Astor Piazzolla. In this album, Stachev showcases both well-known Piazzolla masterpieces as well as less frequently performed works. The latter includes three duets for accordion and violin from Piazzolla’s 'Le Vojage', as well as three solo miniatures. Selections from 'Five Tango Sensations' (Piazzolla’s final work) offer the soloist a vast musical canvas for improvisation. Featuring arrangements that combine accordion and string quartet, the album is full of the passion and drama for which its namesake is immortally known... Accordion music is, it would seem, a love it or loath it genre. And whilst I don't necessarily gravitate towards this style of music, I have to admit that I was really impressed by the production values of this album. But, more importantly, I was introduced to the world of Astor Piazzolla. And that's a wonderfully emotive experience. The album opens with 'Adios Nonino', a memorable thematic piece which draws you in. Classical in its approach, the accordion gives it a European flavour. I wish that the rest of the album had been as strong as this opening. Sadly, with the exception of the soulful 'Jardines de Africa', the other tracks are interesting, but instantly forgettable. Fans of Piazzolla will find this a loving homage to the great man, and classical music lovers will find this of interest. It's not a release I'd listen to very often, but when I do dig it out in the future, I know I'll enjoy it for what it is - a diverse collection of classical based thematic pieces. 7 Darren Rea Buy this item online
