Jonathan Karrant’s holiday album represents a timeless collection, featuring Grammy-winning jazz legend Diane Schuur, iconic saxophonist Houston Person, and trumpeter Kenny Rampton of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Together, this extraordinary ensemble breathes new life into twelve of the most beloved holiday classics, offering profound and uniquely reimagined arrangements that celebrate the spirit of the season in unforgettable style... Christmas is almost upon us and Jonathan Karrant's Christmas Wish release delivers 13 festive tracks (53 min, 33 sec) all given a jazz-infused slant. The jazz is very much in the style of Vince Guaraldi, particularly his compositions for the animated television adaptations of the Peanuts comic strip. In fact Guaraldi's spirit is alive and well in Karrant's interpretation of his beloved 'Christmas Time is Here'. For me, the standout track was 'Grown-Up Christmas List', which features Diane Schuur. This was the one song on the album which Karrant totally nailed by delivering his own spin on the classic 1989 David Foster song, which he originally performed with Natalie Cole. The problem with most Christmas albums of this nature is that in order to appeal to as many people as possible there's a real danger that the focus on content may be overlooked. So, here, we have classic pop songs next to traditional carols, all wrapped up with a jazz bow. Whilst I personally enjoyed my time with Christmas Wish, it might not fare so well with those who are not keen on jazz.
