Claudia Sarne's score for Supergirl is released via WaterTower Music. The film reveals the origin of the interplanetary nomad Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, cousin of Kal-El, better known as Superman. Headstrong, worldly-wise, and often reckless, Supergirl exudes a brand of heroism all her own - truthful, relatable, and always on her own terms. But when an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion. Together they undertake an epic, interstellar journey, struggling to balance one’s need for vengeance with the pursuit of justice - and to save the life of Kara’s best friend, her dog Krypto. Ultimately Supergirl will prove that doing good can be tough… and it doesn’t always have to be nice...

Claudia Sarne's approach to the music for Supergirl is vibrant, modern and pretty progressive. I was a little worried, at first, that this was going to be a collection of ambient set pieces with no clear structure. However, whilst that is the case for a small section of the score, on the whole what Sarne delivers is a little more original than the usual superhero fare.

The themes, across these 19 tracks (49 min, 35 sec), are subtle, yet engaging, and the energy is undeniably infectious. Tracks like 'Skalarians' could easily have been a '90s dance hit akin to the work of Orbital. Meanwhile, the opening 'Supergirl Suite' and 'Krypton Destroyed' are thematically memorable.

My main complaint is that there are a few too many segments which are simply background ambient noise. Nowhere is this more evident than on the track 'Krem'. Whilst this heightens the onscreen action, played in isolation it tends to fall a little flat.

The majority of the score is engaging, compelling, and certainly worthy of a superhero movie.
