In a shocking scandal, the like of which has not been seen
in the English aristocracy since the eighteenth century, Lord
Peter Wimsey's elder brother the Duke of Denver stands accused
of murder...
While
hosting a shooting party at Riddlesdale Hall, the Duke of
Denver is found in the middle of the night, standing over
the body of his sister's fiancée who has been shot
through the heart. The Duke refuses to provide an alibi, and
is subsequently arrested.
Lord
Peter is determined to prove his brother's innocence, yet
finds him strangely uncooperative. Furthermore, other family
members apparently oppose Peter's attempts to get to the truth.
His sister Lady Mary seems to know more than she is letting
on - could the Duke be protecting her? In collaboration with
Inspector Parker, Wimsey slowly uncovers a web of lies and
deceit within his own family, and finds himself faced with
the unhappy alternative of sending either his brother of his
sister to the gallows. Until he himself becomes a target.
Clouds
of Witness was first broadcast in 1974 and is another
murder mystery audio drama based on the book by Dorothy L.
Sayers. The twist this time around is that Lord Peter's family
are at the centre of the crime.
Patricia
Routledge guest stars in this story and plays... well, Patricia
Routledge. If there was ever an actress with such a narrow
field of acting I've yet to discover her. Yet, everyone loves
her for who she is.
I
have to be honest and say that I thought that this audio drama
was actually too long. Spread over three discs, it could have
easily have been cut down to two and I feel that the story
would have been stronger for it.
At
the end of the day this is yet another entertaining murder
mystery that will keep amateur sleuths entertained.
