Twenty years have passed since the Darling children visited
Neverland. Grown-up now, with children of their own, they
still dream of that magical place and the boy who lives there.
But their dreams come tinged with darkness. Something is wrong
in Neverland - and it will take courage to put it right...
In
August 2004 the Special Trustees of Great Ormond Street Children's
Hospital, who hold the copyright to Peter Pan, launched
a worldwide search for a writer to create a sequel to J. M.
Barrie's timeless masterpiece. Renowned and multi award-winning
English author Geraldine McCaughrean won the honour to write
the official sequel, Peter Pan in Scarlet.
Peter
Pan in Scarlet shares most of the same enchanting characters
as the original.
Like the original, it will appeal to both adults and children
alike. Set in the 1930s the new story offers high adventure,
dramatic tension and all the swashbuckling, danger and derring-do
they can handle.
Dreams
are leaking out of Neverland and into the Real World, leaving
behind uncomfortable dregs in the beds of Wendy, John, Slightly,
Tootles and the rest. But time has moved on since the children's
return from Neverland. Twenty years, in fact. So the homecomers
are now adults with children of their own. If they want to
go back and solve the mystery, the first thing they must do
is recover their childhood (the only passport to Neverland).
Once Peter Pan comes on the scene, of course, all thoughts
of a rescue mission are forgotten in favour of adventure -
a quest - a journey of exploration, a treasure hunt, out to
the farthest reaches of Never-been-there-land. There are encounters
with pirates, a circus, animals, witches, fairies at war,
as well as plenty of opportunities for heroism/
This
BBC radio dramatisation captures all of the excitement of
the book and, if
you ignore the whooping and general Americanised feeling to
this tale, you should enjoy every second of it. Whether you
are a fan of the original Peter Pan story, or buying
this for your children to listen to, it's well worth getting
hold of.
