The Man of Steel has been taken over by Maxwell Lord, the
sinister leader behind Checkmate and one of the main causes
of the troubles facing Earth's metahuman community. Superman
is forced to hallucinate, believing Brainiac, Darkseid and
Ruin are threatening his loved ones when in actuality, it's
he who is causing the rampant destruction that threatens to
kill some of his closest friends...
Sacrifice
is another one of the Countdown to Infinite Crisis
series of graphic novels. While I know what this collection
is all about and what it's building up to, I can't help but
feel that it's a bit of a pointless exercise grouping them
all under this title. Casual readers may not know what Countdown
to Infinite Crisis is all about and, not wanting to join
a series part way through, pass up the chance to read a strong
Superman tale as a consequence.
This
collection sees Superman battling it out with all manner of
his deadliest foes, only after a while it becomes obvious
that something isn't right. We get to see what is really going
on, while the Man of Steel is still oblivious to what is really
happening to him.
A
word of warning. Don't read the blurb on the back of this
collection. I've reprinted it above, edited so as not to spoil
one of the surprises. It's nothing major, but there are a
good few panels where you are unsure of who Superman has critically
injured.
I
loved the dilemma that Wonder Woman was faced with. And given
the same situation I think most of us would do the same and
live with the consequences - who knows how many other innocent
civilians would have perished if she had not done what she
did.
At
the end of the day, this is another well conceived Superman
graphic novel, beautifully illustrated and wonderfully presented.
