Once a proud member of a fearless gang, Yajima Kintaro left
his reckless surroundings and disappeared. Now, years later,
he is back with an infant son, Ryuta, and is determined to
become a white-collar worker thanks to a new job working for
a large construction company...
Salaryman
Kintaro is based on the comic strip originally created
by Hiroshi Motomiya - which went on to spawn a live action
TV show, starring Katsunori Takahashi as Kintaro.
In
Volume 4 in this collection, Kintaro once again heads
straight into trouble when his extraordinary success sees
him transferred to a city and a new department. It's here
that he realises he has much to learn about how deadly office
politics can be.
Kintaro
Returns Home: Sub-section Chief Takatsukasa arrives at
Yamato Construction with big changes in mind, and Kintaro
firmly in his sights.
Kintaro
Connects People: Kintaro has tea with Madam Nakamura,
who is much more than she seems, while Takatsukasa takes measures
to eliminate his rival.
Kintaro
Transferred: Kintaro is transferred to Kahoku City and
finds out his new superior, sub-chief Igo, packs quite a punch.
Kintaro
Works in Sales: Under Igo's supervision, Kintaro is thrown
in at the deep end at a contract bid and finds bureaucracy
is an enemy that maybe even he can't beat.
This collection also sees Kintaro and his son, Rayu, visit
the grave of Kintaro's mother, who died while he was very
young. At the cemetery Kintaro meets his father, who was imprisoned
for the apparent murder of an innocent civilian. It later
transpires that, while not a good man by any means, that Kintaro's
father was actually covering for a friend who had a young
wife and child - and that he went to prison to protect this
man.
We
also learn that the construction company that Kintaro works
for is not as good as the other companies in Tokyo. And that
the directors are having a hard time remaining profitable.
There are some great moments in this collection, including
an old woman who has the hots for Kintaro and there are many
touching scenes between Kintaro and his son.
This
collection works well to expand the Salaryman Kintaro
universe, and if you are new to this series there is enough
information presented to ensure that you don't feel totally
lost.
Another
cracking release in what is quickly becoming a must own collection.
