One day three goddesses appeared on the earth, they are full of mischief and sometimes they can make themselves very small...

As some of you may already know I'm a big fan of both anime and manga, the problem with anime is that it's often difficult, at first, to work out the target audience. In the case of Mini-Goddess I can only presume that the show is aimed at six to twelve year olds and not the fans of the original Oh My Goddess. Some of the original characters have been replaced by a rat and the remaining girls are, well, the B team at best.

Now this isn't meant to be a criticism (be honest, it is), let's face it The Magic Roundabout was aimed at the same age group and that had a stoned bunny and a sugar addicted dog and was a generally brilliant show. The episodes are bizarrely short, about six minutes a piece, so it makes it feel very much like a show designed to act as filler between other longer shows.

The volume four disc contains episode thirty-seven to forty-eight, but you'd have to be going some to sit through the whole lot. I did and am now seriously considering therapy. The animation is minimal at best; as you watch the show it's very evident that for the most part there is little movement in individual scenes, usually just the mouths, all else remains static. The writing is fairly slick and if you're a fan of the show (yes, you in the back hiding) then you're going to be in pig heaven. Everyone else should stay well clear.

I find it hard to find much to recommend in this show. The shortness of the episodes does not allow for character development or any complex plots, leading to a lot of repetition if watched one after another. The show is obviously played for laughs, but to honest the characters are on the screen for such a short period of time that you don't really care what happens to them.

The lack of depth to the show is reflected in the amount of extras. You get character notes and a gallery as well as the non credit ending and a bunch of trailers for much better shows. Even if you thought that you'd like to get it for your kids for something short and sweet to watch, I'd still rather recommend the original Magic Roundabout.

So a short review for some very short episodes. If you're a fan then knock yourself out, but I can't see what anyone else could see in such an obvious filler show. Fans of the original Oh My Goddess should stay well clear, lest it invoke in you apoplexy.
