| A young man called Hiroshi Takagi wakes up in hospital after
a serious road accident with no memory of his life up to that
point. His father tells him that he was going to train to
be a doctor/surgeon, but the reality is he had decided to
abandon the field. He had chosen on a life with his girlfriend,
who was killed in the crash. However, he doesn't remember
any of this. So when he discovers some of his old text books,
Hiroshi enters medical school and is soon the most gifted
student. There is a shock in store when, in anatomy, he is
given the body of his girlfriend to dissect. Events become
even more bizarre when the dead girl begins appearing to him.
Are these visions returned memories of his recent life, or
                    something more sinister...?
 I
have seen a review of this film which describes it as a confusing
hotchpotch of flashbacks which make it difficult to realise
what is current and what is reminiscence. I had no trouble
differentiating between the two, in actual fact Vital
is a pretty well-structured and coherent piece of work. It
has also been described as a horror film, which it quite clearly
is not. Rather, it serves its purpose as a psychological drama,
with the Hiroshi character exploring his emotions in the grieving
process. Tadanobu Asano pulls off a decent job of acting cold
and distant in life and yet warm and emotional (like the young
lover he is) in the mental images/fantasy scenes. A solid
exploration of the human psyche. Special
Features include a commentary from original author Tom Mes,
a Music Video (Cocco - Blue Bird), the Venice Premiere footage,
a Shinya Tsukamoto (who directed the Tetsuo movies)
interview, Cast & Crew Q&A, Behind the Scenes featurette,
                    and Making the Props.
