Everyone's favourite prehistoric creatures are back. Manny
the woolly mammoth, Sid the sloth, Diego the sabre-toothed
tiger, and the hapless prehistoric squirrel/rat known as Scrat
return for more subzero adventures. As the ice age is coming
to an end, our heroes soon realise that their habitat is under
serious threat and decide to head for a new, safer environment...
Manny
may be ready to start a family, but nobody has seen another
mammoth for a long time; in fact, Manny thinks he may be the
last one. That is, until he miraculously finds Ellie (voiced
by Queen Latifah), the only female mammoth left in the world.
Their only problem: they can't stand each other. Oh, and Ellie
somehow thinks she's a possum. Ellie comes with some excess
baggage in the form of her two possum "brothers" Crash and
Eddie (voiced by Seann William Scott and Josh Peck), a couple
of daredevil pranksters and cocky, loudmouthed troublemakers.
Manny,
Sid, and Diego quickly learn that the warming climate has
one major drawback: a huge glacial dam holding back oceans
of water is about to break, threatening the entire valley.
The only chance of survival lies at the other end of the valley.
So our three heroes, along with Ellie, Crash and Eddie, form
the most unlikely family as they embark on a mission across
an ever-changing, increasingly dangerous landscape.
For
those of you that have seen the first Ice Age movie,
Ice Age 2: The Meltdown is a worthy sequel. While it's
not quite up to the standard of the first film, it's still
a great family movie - with something for everyone.
This
time around added comedy is injected by the introduction of
the possum twins Crash and Eddie who get up to all kinds of
mischief. I for one was glad that this due was introduced
as I was starting to get a little bored of Scrat to be honest.
In fact Scrat was beginning to seem like a poor man's Wile.
E Coyote from the Roadrunner cartoons - although, oddly
enough, I really enjoyed the additional time travelling Scrat
animated short No Time For Nuts, which is included
on this DVD.
On
the main disc you get the movie as well as an audio commentary
from director Carlos Saldanha; audio commentary from Producer
Lori Forte and the production team; No Time For Nuts
short film featuring Scrat; and Factoid Meltdown which
is a multiple choice game.
The
two disc collection has loads of extras. Disc two includes
multi-angle
animation comparisons; Scrat's breaking story; Scrat news
report; Scrat from head to toe; Music video from Lee Ryan;
Meet The Modeler featurette; Outtake prank; Making
A Scene featurette; 6 Student films on the ice age period;
Set-top games; Musical montage; Sound effects lab; Crash and
Eddie stunts; Voices Of Ice Age 2 featurette; Ice
Age 2 international TV special; Trailers; and TV spot.
At
the end of the day this is an enjoyable movie which will keep
both adults and children entertained for its duration.
