For those of you that have never seen an episode Emmerdale,
and lets face it there cant be that many, the show depicts
the murder, mayhem and sexual shenanigans which seem to make
up the daily life of a countryside town. Along with Eastenders
and Coronation Street it stands as one of the longer
running successful soaps on television. Debuting in nineteen
seventy-two on ITV the show has gone from strength to strength,
even surviving the departure of all of the Sugden family,
the original focus of the show, leaving Jack as the only survivor.
Along
with a slew of other DVD games relating to television and
films the Emmerdale Game has finally hit the shelves.
The
game is played with one to four people or teams, answering
questions about the show. Teams get to muse over various categories
- Families, Workplace, Romance, Woolpack, Feuds and Friendship
in order to answer a question from each category. If you have
already answered a category correctly and it comes up again,
and you get it wrong, you loose your points and have to answer
another question from the same category to get it back. Initially
this is a very annoying idea, though in actual play it makes
for a more interesting game. Like Trivial Pursuit you
have to get a correct answer from each of the categories to
win.
You
can play a time limited game, which would seem to be preferred
to the untimed game which would just lead to murder over the
Christmas period, after everyone has lost the will to live
with granny - who has spent the last forty minutes trying
to answer a single question.
From
the main menu you can choose to play the standard game, just
collecting each category once or a longer game which makes
you collect each category twice. For those of you who think
you have a grasp of some of the more obscure facts about the
show, you can play the Super Fan game.
The interface, though presented in 16:9, is very basic. Once
you have chosen which game to play you input the number of
players and choose an Emmerdale character to represent
you. You would have to be a bit of a Billy-no-mates to have
to play this on your own, like the others in the series these
are best played with a group of friends after a few liberal
libations.
The
game purports to have over seven hundred questions including
images and clips from the show, dating back to the nineties.
The one odd thing is that, whilst I came across images, I
never found any clips. So, I went into the disc to play the
individual VOB files and still there were no clips. If they
exist they are well hidden.
So,
another Christmas stocking filler which will, no doubt, look
a less cheap and cheerful (than it really is) after a few
drinks.
