The Empire Movie Quiz features over 1200 questions
on every area of the movie world from Star Wars to
Seven Samurai. Fly solo or team up with friends or
family in your quest to win the Empire five star rating. And
don't worry if you're only a fledgling film buff, questions
are divided into two categories: Easy Riders for beginners
and Hard Boiled for those who fancy themselves as the next
Martin Scorsese...
With
the run up to Christmas 2006 everyone seems to be bringing
out an interactive quiz DVD. Sadly the majority of these just
don't live up to expectations. But - and trust me here, I've
played most of them - the Empire Movie Quiz is by far
and away the worst of the bunch.
According
to the press release, this game features over 1200 questions.
That might well be the case, but for some reason the same
questions kept popping up time and time again. While that
is to be expected every now and again, this game does it all
the time. In fact I was seriously starting to wonder whether
the advertised "1200 questions" was a mistake and
the actual text should have read "120 questions".
How else do you explain the fact that the same question came
up four times the first three attempts we had at this DVD.
Yes, that's right... on the third attempt the question was
repeated in the same game. And there were at least another
10 questions that were repeated in those four games we played
- some just the once, but several three times.
And,
even worse, one question we were asked ended up telling us
we were wrong (when we weren't) and revealed that the the
answer was one that wasn't even in the original question.
What happened here is that the DVD question and answers section
got mixed up between two totally different questions. We were
asked: "Who directed The Nightmare Before Christmas".
When we answered we were told we were wrong: "The person
who voiced a character in the movie a Shark's Tale
was..." Fantastic!
On
the plus side, the actual presentation and thought of the
menus and gameplay looks impressive (If you can stomach the
American voice over). The music between each level gets you
into the mood and the DVD doesn't pause too long between sections.
But the fact that this is practically unplayable due to the
bugs is a crying shame - and certainly something that Empire
will want to distance itself from as soon as possible.
With
so many other interactive quiz DVDs being released in a similar
vein you really should think long and hard before you throw
£20 down the drain. If this had been a free covermount
DVD given away with the latest issue of Empire, then
you might just excuse its faults. But, as a full prized DVD,
this is certainly not worth buying.
