Test your musical knowledge and find out whether you're worthy
of a Q five-star rating or worthy of nothing at all.
All you need is a TV, a DVD player and your remote control
to take the challenge...
Christmas
2006, for me, will go down in history as the year that the
the most interactive DVDs were launched on an unsuspecting
public. I'm feeling a little left out because I don't have
my own.
Q
music magazine is the latest high profile periodical to risk
its reputation as a quality publication (Empire
film magazine also made a similar mistake this year) with
the release of its very own DVD interactive quiz. Sad to say,
the results are rather disappointing!
You
know that things are not promising when a DVD label you've
never heard of is behind the release. These aren't straight
forward releases, they need serious quality checks to ensure
that they play on all DVD players and that there are no bugs
lurking in there - not to mention the fact that each question
and answer needs verifying.
The
presentation of this release is nothing short of abysmal.
Firstly there seems to be no production values at all - no
music, or famous DJ asking the questions. As far as the game
play is concerned, it's a strictly single person affair. While
you can play as a team, the DVD only allows a single player
(or group game) and there is no attempt made at all to turn
this into a proper competitive quiz. It's probably best played
on Christmas Day afternoon when all the family are together
as the questions are stretched over several generations (although
gran better not be expecting any Vera Lynn questions).
The
game is split into two modes. There's the main quiz which
asks 120 questions (15 in each round) and then gives you a
five score rating on your results, or the Quickfire 20 round
in which you are asked 20 random questions.
What
was really annoying is that after you've played the main quiz
once you might as well stick this DVD away for good. I don't
know how many questions there are on the disc, but we got
asked a few too many more than once - even in the same game
- so playing this more than a few times is a little pointless,
unless you have the memory of a goldfish.
So,
is this game worthy of a Q five-star rating? Is it
'eckers like! I'd give it one-star - and that's being generous.
