The once impenetrable band of seven, now diminished to six, was forced to come to terms with the inevitable when Gorobei risked his life to save his brethren. With sword in hand, Kambei is determined to find answers. Leaving the surviving samurai behind, Kambei departs on a solitary trek, with an even more perilous mission in mind. After a confrontation with the Emperor lands him in prison, Kambei awaits his fate as the purported assassin of the Imperial Envoy. But, turmoil at the Capital is far from over. Ukyo's sudden rise to power has put Kambei at his mercy, and sparing his life is not what this scheming Emperor has in mind...

Volume 5 of Samurai 7 contains another four episodes (reading that back, that sentence seems a little confusing) of the animated Japanese series.

The Remembrance: With one of the seven dead, and two gone, Katsushiro and Kikuchiyo reflect on past events and experiences with the group while coming to grips with what they must do next.

The Emperor: Kambei meets with the Guardians and claims that he killed Amanushi's envoy in Ayamoro's house - which began the samurai round up in the first place - so that they will take him to the capital city. Although he's going there as a prisoner, Kambei is not without a plan to save the women kidnapped by the Nobuseri.

The Mutiny: While Katsushiro, Kikuchiyo, Kirara, and Komachi plan to save Kambei from the Amanushi, Ukyo is chosen as the successor of Amanushi with a shocking discovery. Even more shocking is what he plans to do next.

The Execution: With Ukyo as the new Amanushi, his plan begins to reveal itself. He places samurai in every village of the empire, ordering them to follow the model of the "Seven of Kanna Village". Meanwhile, he orders the Nobuseri to continue with their raids, but secretly confides to Tessai that he is planning to eliminate them. While Ukyo's plan unravels, Kambei awaits his execution, but is he without a plan? Elsewhere, Katsushiro and the others make their way to the capital. Can they make it in time?

As with previous releases in the series extras are very thin on the ground - with only clean opening and closing credits of any real interest.

The story continues to roll on smoothly and with only two discs left in this series all the signs are that fans will get an explosive conclusion.
