Heavily-armed weapons of war, known as hounds, dominate ground
battles during warfare in the near-future. Squads of hounds
take to the field in international factions, co-operating
with and complementing each other in terms of firepower, range
of movement, and abilities. Domination of the world is the
prize for the mightiest army on the field. Take the role of
either a squad member or a tactics commander, who is responsible
for strategically guiding the team to victory with verbal
commands on Xbox Live. The game offers thousands of upgrade
options, which effect both the look and performance of player
mechs...
Chromehounds
is
a squad-based action title that puts gamers in control of
giant mechanised military weapons of war known as hounsd -
that looks a lot like ED209 from Robocop.
Handling
the actual hound is so simple that you'll get the hang of
it in no time. However you won't be rushing from one side
of the map to the other - your vehicle is incredibly slow
moving. This can be a bit of a pain at times - due to the
fact you'll need to get close to some of your enemies while
they are firing at you.
There's
quite a lot of fun to be had towering over your enemies soldiers
and watching as they fall as you blast them to smithereens.
It's also great destroying buildings and other hounds, but
this game is much better if you play online with other gamers.
There
are so many modes (eg Capture the Flag, Deathmatch, Survivor
and variations of these such as Break All) and there is such
a big difference between the single and multi-player modes
that you could be forgiven for thinking that this was two
very different games. While the single player is extremely
challenging, I really enjoyed the online battles (where you
can work with up to 19 other players to blast the competition
to kingdom come).
This
won't be to everyone's liking. If you want to get in there
and shoot away without thinking about tactics, then you'll
find Chromehounds to be a little disappointing. This
is a game where you need to think about every move and upgrade
that you make.
The
added ability to be able to customise your hound means that
you can create something with an impressive array of firepower.
And while this section of the game looks daunting, it won't
take you too long to get to grips with making your own vehicle.
All
in all Chromehounds has more positive points than negative.
I really enjoyed it, but I know plenty of people how don't.
I'd advise you try before you buy.
