An ancient evil has emerged from the past, plummeting the
world into total darkness. When a young dragon named Spyro
leaves his home searching for the truth about his origins,
what he discovers is a shocking revelation - that the future
of the world rests on his wings. In a race against time, Spyro
must realise his destiny and learn what it takes to be a hero...

                  Hats
off to the developers of The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning
for attempting to reinvent Spyro. Let's be honest,
as much as we all love the little purple fellow, he was getting
a bit dull. A New Beginning works incredibly well in
its bid to reinvent the franchise.
                  The
opening, which shows Spyro entering the world as an egg, is
about as close to a movie opening that I've seen in a kid's
game. Our hero is discovered by a family of dragonflies, who
raise him as one of their own. Once Spyro learns that he is
not a dragonfly, he sets off, with his dragonfly brother,
to find out what happened to his kind. It's not long before
he meets a large dragon who tells him of his kinds past. Spyro
is then sent off on a quest to hunt down several other elderly
dragons - all of whom have the ability to control a different
                    elemental power.
                  Once
you've rescued a dragon they will teach you how to use their
powers, so that you can pick and choose which power to use
as you fight your way through the bad guys.
                  There's
plenty of the trademark Spyro humour and you never
really feel as though you are just going through the motions
as you attack wave after wave of enemies. The different environments
and beasties help to keep this game fresh and exciting for
                    the duration.
                  Remember
though, this is a game for the younger age group and it works
well for that market. It might not be everyone's cup of tea,
but it proves that there is still life in the old dragon yet.
