Gliding is considered by some to be an inexpensive way to get airborne and by others as a cutting-edge knuckle ride sport. Now you have the chance to jump into a glider and soar through the air from the comfort of your own home...

Glider Simulation was originally designed as a training program for sailplane lovers. So a realistic reaction to handling and flight simulation were primary targets of this simulator. In addition, an important part of the development of this program has been the simulation of both thermal and ridge lift used by glider pilots as the only "engine" to keep their planes in the air allowing them to cover very long distances, attain great heights and stay aloft for extended amounts of time.

Microsoft Flight Simulator offers gamers the option of flying in a glider, so why should you pay out £20 for a simulator that only allows you to fly a glider? Well, for starters, while the glider option in Flight Simulator is pretty impressive it's really only a small part of something much bigger and the handling and design is not as well polished as it could have been.

In Glider Simulator everything has been built around the needs of the glider enthusiasts. For starters you even get to be towed up into the air by a prop plane - instead of just appearing in the sky for no reason. Add to this the enhanced handling and control system and you have a pretty impressive simulator for glider enthusiasts.

You can check on your surroundings using the virtual cockpit, which is controlled by using the mouse. As with a real glider, co-ordinated use of the rudder is extremely important and Wing Slips can also be used when approaching the runway. An interesting addition is the ability to use your webcam to pan your view.

There are various modes you can play in, or you can just get up there and enjoy the peace and quiet as you glide around. You can fly with a club, but you have to observe their rules. Whether you are learning to fly under the constraints of club rules or competing against your colleagues in a World Championship, your skills as a pilot will be put to the test.

The addition of online play also adds another dimension to this release. No longer need you sit alone at your computer - you can now compete against other like-minded individuals from all over the globe.

If you are just looking for a general flight simulator, you'd be advised to look elsewhere, but for glider enthusiasts it doesn't come much better than this.
