The
Kalahari Typing School for Men opens with bad news for
Mma Ramotswe - her agency has competition in the form of the
Satisfaction Guaranteed Detective Agency, run by a man. Mma
Makutsi has entrepreneurial ambitions too, and has conceived
the idea of teaching an evening class where men could learn
to type.
Mma
Potokwane's plan to get Mr J.L.B. Matekoni to take his medication
and cure him of his depression seems to be working. When Mma
Ramotswe goes to see him he is playing football with the orphanage
boys - something she's never seen him do before. Meanwhile
there is some light relief in the opening of Mma Makutsi's
typing school for men. While a little sexist (imagine if it
had been a car maintenance school for women run by a man -
would the stereotypical attitudes be tolerated so easily?
I doubt it), there is much fun to be had as Mma Makutsi sets
about teaching her students. Sadly her equipment is a little
substandard.
The
Admirer sees Mma Ramotswe commissioned by a physiotherapist
to find out what her errant husband is up to. There are also
problems at home: one of her foster children, Motheleli, is
unhappy, and Mr J. L. B. Matekoni is still reluctant to talk
about marriage. Mma Makutsi, however, has found a boyfriend.
Again,
much of the humour from this episode comes from Mma Makutsi's
evening class. She thinks she has found the perfect man for
her amongst her students. Could this be the start of a wonderful
relationship?
This
volume is another great addition to the series.
