When 4400 missing people, who were apparently snatched over
a period of time by aliens, are returned all at once, the
US government launches an investigation into the phenomenon.
                    It
gradually becomes clear that the 4400 have returned with strange
new abilities, and that their presence will change the human
race forever. This official in-depth companion to the first
two seasons of the show is packed with behind-the-scenes interviews,
exclusive pictures and a comprehensive episode guide...
                  Ah,
another "official" companion is published by Titan
Books. When it's done properly (Battlestar
                    Galactica, Smallville,
                    Farscape,
                    Firefly)
these books are a welcome addition to any fan's collections.
                    When it's done poorly (Stargate:
                    SG-1, Stargate:
Atlantis) the results are only of any interested
                    to die-hard fans.
                  Thankfully
there are more hits than misses in Titan's catalogue. Sadly,
this 4400 Companion falls into the later category.
I can't help feeling sorry for author Terry J. Erdmann. He's
obviously done a lot of research and (I assume) conducted
all the interviews himself. It's just a shame that this book
is released so late (by the time this book goes on sale the
third season will be available to own on DVD in the UK).
                  And
then there's the usually complaint that this is a very dry
affair, with a paper stock that is not the best choice for
reprinting the numerous black and white photographs on. Not
only that, but the typesetter must have something wrong with
his eyes. I felt that I was reading this book while wearing
sunglasses - the photos are all far too dark. We do get 16
glossy colour pages in the middle of this collection - but
they are nothing special really, just publicity stills.
                  The
NAC Information Archive is about the most interesting aspect
of this collection - revealing lots of bits of trivia that
fans may not be aware of. Everything else is available to
read on a million and one fan-based websites.
                  The
end result is a fairly disappointing affair that is just too
dry. I think most people will realise this if they flick through
it before buying it. One for hard-core fans only.
