Honk your horn for hilarious fun with Sid James and the rest
of the Carry On gang. Hattie Jacques plays Peggy, the
long-suffering wife of the workaholic owner of Speedy Cabs,
Charlie. Peggy decides to get one up on her hubby and starts
a rival firm, Glam Cabs, and soon starts beating Charlie at
his own game. The secret of her success is simple: She only
employs gorgeous female taxi drivers...
Carry
On Cabby
(1963) is the first Carry On movie to introduce us
to the, what would be an on going, on-screen relationship
between Sid James and Hattie Jacques (if you discount the
flirting that was evident in Constable).
Jacques plays Peggy, the long-suffering wife to James's Charlie,
who
owns Speedy Taxis. Charlie is a man devoted to his work, much
to the distaste of Peggy. Fed up with coming second to a fare,
Peggy hatches a plan to set up her own rival firm, Glamcabs.
To her surprise and Charlie's dismay, Glamcabs is a raging
success and threatens to put Charlie out of business.
This
movie is notable for the lack of Kenneth Williams, as well
as the first appearance of both Jim Dale and Amanda Barrie.
Extras
include an audio commentary with Liz Fraser and Carry On
historian Robert Ross; stills gallery; trivia notes; and theatrical
trailer.
In
the audio commentary, Fraser discusses her reasons for leaving
the Carry On movies (basically her agent told her that
it was getting harder to get her other roles because she was
starting to be seen as a Carry On actress); her despair
at the false image that has grown up about Sid James - she
points out he was a gent in every way; Irene Handel's practical
jokes - including pretending to collapse in the wings in a
play, just after Sid James's death on stage; and her moaning
about how mean Peter Rogers was.
This
release is also supposed to contain a documentary from 1977
called That's Carry On. Sadly I can't comment on this
as it wasn't included on the review disc we received.
And,
while not being hailed (geddit?) as one of the best in the
series, Carry on Cabby is certainly fare-ly (geddit?
Oh, please yourself) good entertainment - especially f you
ignore the rather odd chase sequence at the end.
