A life on the ocean wave with the Carry On crew. Sid
James is the long-suffering captain of the luxury cruise liner
S.S. Happy Wanderer, a ship full of misfits who don't know
their portholes from any other holes. It isn't long before
the luckless passengers mix with hopeless crew to raise titanic
laughs on the ship of fools...
Carry
on Cruising (1962)
is the franchise's first colour movie and sees a group of
new recruits, behaving like fish out of water, onboard a luxury
cruise liner. Captain
Crowther is in charge of a cruise liner where the crew and
passengers seem ideally matched; they're both as inept as
each other. The chef suffers from seasickness, the doctor
falls helplessly in love with one of the passengers and the
first officer sees the whole thing as beneath his not-so-obvious
talents.
Yet
again the Carry On theme of new faces in a different
environment raises its head (Sergeant,
and Constable
being the other two notable movies were this formulaic plot
device was used. After the rather disappointing Regardless,
Cruising sees a spectacular return to form for the
series.
Charles
Hawtrey and Joan Sims's absence is hardly noticeable as we
are introduced to new members of the Carry On crew
and Sid James, later to provide much amusement as a lecherous
old man, shows us here that he really can act. Kenneth Connor
is also an unlikely leading man in this very funny Carry
On.
Extras
include an audio commentary with Dilys
Laye,
Lance
Percival
and Carry On historian Robert Ross; stills gallery;
trailer and trivia notes.
The
commentary provides plenty of insightful information including
the fact that Dilys Laye was only offered the role at the
last minute because Joan Sims was ill. It was also interesting
to learn that Lance Percival, who was Kenneth William's theatre
warm up man at the time, was going to play the part of the
barman until Charles Hawtrey was dropped because he was asking
for too much money.
While
this may not be in the top tier of all time favourite Carry
On movies for most fans, it's still one of my favourites
- mainly because it's great to see the characters before they
started to become caricatures of themselves.
