Prepare for six of the best as the Carry On team cause
chaos in the school yard. When a well-loved headmaster decides
to retire, his scheming pupils have other ideas. The cunning
boys unleash a campaign of practical jokes, armed with gin,
itching powder and bombs. No one is safe from the classroom
havoc in this Carry On...
Carry
On Teacher (1959)
was the third film in the Carry On series after Carry
On Sergeant (1958) and Carry On Nurse (1959). The
film sees Ted Ray star as William Wakefield, a headmaster
who is popular with his pupils. When the kids get wind that
Wakefield is up for a promotion, which will mean him leaving
the school, a small group of them organise a mass campaign
of mayhem to ensure that the school inspectors don't move
their beloved headmaster.
Ray
makes an impressive appearance here, and it was fascinating
to hear on the audio commentary that his part in later films
was taken by Sid James. It's interesting to think of how future
Carry On's would have shaped up if James, everyone's
favourite dirty old man, had not taken over the reigns and
Ray had gone on to star instead.
Extras
include an audio commentary with Paul Cole, Larry Dann, Richard
O'Sullivan and Carry On historian Robert Ross (a lot
of which revolves around the actors reminiscing about their
child actor friends); stills gallery; and trivia notes.
The
conclusion to the film is unexpectedly moving. An interesting
Carry On film, but not one of the best.
