Heiichi Morisoto is studying engineering at the Nekomi Institute of Technology. He doesn't have much luck with the opposite sex. However, his romantic fate takes a bizarre turn in the right direction when a misdialled telephone call inadvertently hooks him up to the mysterious Goddess Helpline. Within moments the beautiful Goddess First Class, Belldandy, appears in Heiichi's room to announce he has been awarded one wish. Taken by surprise and flattered by Belldandy's praise of him, he impulsively wishes that he could have a perfect goddess of a girlfriend just like Belldandy by his side forever. For better or worse, Heiichi's wish is granted in the most literal sense, leading to no end of comedic complications for a pairing that is at least half made in Heaven...

Ah! My Goddess is based on the original story by Kosuke Fujishima, which was serialised in Kodansha's monthly magazine Afternoon.

The five episodes on Volume One include:

Ah! You're a Goddess?: Keiichi seems to be the world's most unlucky student. He's always late for class, seem to get picked on by the teacher to answer questions, and gets bossed into doing chores for his dorm and the auto club. After yet another unlucky day, Keiichi dials the wrong telephone number and ends up calling the Goddess Assistance Agency. Seconds later a beautiful woman, Belldandy, appears in his room and grants him one wish.

Ah! Those Who Believe Shall Find Salvation!: Keiichi makes his wish in haste and for some strange reason asks for a Goddess to stay by his side for ever. The wish is registered with the system and can not be undone. Tamiya and Otaki, Keiichi's dorm mates, discover that their friend has broken the rules about having girls in the all-guys dorm. Because of this Keiichi and Belldandy must move out. But where will they go?

Ah! Apprenticeship, Home and the Goddess!: Keiichi and Belldandy search for a place to live, trying out real estate apartment listings, his friends' apartments, and eventually a fairly worn down temple where a monk lets them in, after nearly killing Keiichi. But the crazy monk is not going to let them live there for free and gives them numerous backbreaking chores to do.

Ah! The Queen and the Goddess!: Belldandy has to attend school with Keiichi, thanks to the fact Keiichi's wish involved Belldandy being at his side for ever. However Sayoko, the popular girl on campus, starts to get jealous when she realises that all the guys are starting to fall for Belldandy. Thinking that Sayoko is Belldandy's boyfriend she tries to break the two up. First she accuses Belldandy of not being a real student and then she starts to flirt with Keiichi.

Ah! Living Under One Roof Together!: Keiichi starts to realise that he is actually in love with Belldandy. They've got the rest of their lives to spend together, so he is a little nervous of letting her know how he feels in case these feeling are not reciprocated and things between the two of them become awkward. Eventually he decides to orchestrate a romantic evening at home and take things slowly. But will Belldandy feel even remotely romantic towards him?

Special Features include Japanese Voice Actors Introductions (8 minute TV show interview with Kikuko Inoue, who provides the voice of Belldandy, and Yoko Ishida, who sings the opening and closing credits); Japanese Voice Actors Outtakes (a three and a half minute collection of scenes that didn't make it into the final cut of the episodes); textless opening credits, and DVD credits.

The soundtrack options only offer English and Japanese 2.0 with optional English subtitles.

In summing up then, the first five episode are pretty entertaining and help to set the scene for the series. However, the plot is pretty shallow and I'm wondering how long the writers can keep up an entertaining storyline that wont see the audience getting bored. The original manga, which this series is based, has run for years, but I wonder whether, after a few volumes, everything will start to drag a bit. As it stands, though, this first volume in the series is well worth a look.
