C.S.I. is an acclaimed, edgy, fast-paced drama series about
a passionate team of forensic investigators who work the graveyard
shift at the Las Vegas Criminalistics Bureau. Their job -
to find the missing pieces at the scene that will help to
solve the crime and vindicate those who often cannot speak
for themselves - the victims. Between the hidden clues and
the buried motives lies the trail to the truth because people
lie... but the evidence never does...
The
seventh season of CSI introduces new characters, new
relationships, and new and ever-more confounding crimes. Grissom
and Sara's relationship heats up; Catherine and her daughter
become embroiled in her father's crooked business; Greg is
a victim of a gang beating and Grissom faces his most enigmatic
foe yet - a serial killer who creates a series of "miniatures"
- mini replicas of their real crime scenes, with eerie precision.
Highlights
in this collection include:
Toe
Tags: Crime scene investigation collides with the land
of the living-dead when four corpses "come to life"
in the morgue. We are introduced to each victim as their ghosts
talk us through the reasons behind their body ending up in
the crime lab. Meanwhile, the team tries to solve the mysteries
behind the victims' individual deaths.
Fannysmackin':
A mob of hooded criminals, who surround their victims and
then beat them to death, takes to the strip where they continue
their attacks. Trying to fight crime and put the masked hooligans
behind bars, Greg becomes a victim of the group's violence.
This episode sees the start of a story arc for Greg as he
has to defend his actions during his attack.
Burn
Out: The CSIs investigate the mysterious disappearance
of two young boys who live in close proximity to a known sex
offender. Grissom employs the help of the sex offender to
put him inside the mind of a pedophile and in turn catch the
killer. This episode stars Alan
Tudyk (I,
Robot, Firefly,
Serenity)
as a known sex offender. What's great about this episode is
that it shows a different side to sex offenders. Instead of
the demonising the condition, if paints them in a much more
realistic light - that they are very ill humans who need serious
help.
Happenstance:
Two estranged identical twins are killed within a couple hours
of each other; one is the victim of a drive-by shooting while
the other is found dead, in what appears to be a suicide.
The team struggles to piece together the sisters' pasts in
order to catch their criminal. This episode examines the deaths
of both sisters by splitting the episode into two distinct
halves - each following a different sister.
Living
Legend: When a number of men, with a past together, start
turning up dead, all the signs point to the return of an old
mob legend, Mikey Dunn. Dunn famously disappeared years before,
and now the reason for his vanish act look to have been solved
- when his car is found and raised from a watery grave, with
a skeleton behind the wheel. But as his old associates start
to die one by one the CSI team start to wonder if Dunn has
returned from the grave to take his revenge on those that
murdered him. This episode is probably the very first where
I worked out everything before the halfway point. From the
very first scene I knew that the guy who was singing was wearing
prosthetic make-up. However, this is still probably the most
enjoyable episode in this box set. There's an interesting
guest star in this episode too.
Locomotives:
A man incriminates himself when he falls in cement when trying
to transport his wife's dead body. Meanwhile, Grissom comes
face to face with the miniature killer when the third and
final murder takes place at a slaughterhouse. CSI doesn't
do comedy very often, but when they do they really nail it.
The investigation into the man buried up to his waist in cement
may not sound funny, but when the episode concludes, and you
hear about his day, you can't help but see the funny side.
The
other story follows the miniature killer. I haven't mentioned
the miniature killer before, because those episodes were not
particularly noteworthy - although the miniature aspects were.
In two previous episodes in this collection Grissom has found
a miniature model of the crime scene that is identical in
every slight detail. Buy how could someone possibly spend
so much time creating such models and then know that the crime
scene would match in every detail? While this episode reveals
who the murderer is, I'm not so sure this is the end of the
tale, as several things just didn't add up - and the doll's
head image, that is hidden in each model, was never really
explained. Also, the next episode in this collection (Leaving
Las Vegas) concludes with another model being sent to
Grissom.
Sweet
Jane: While this episode is by far the worst in this collection
- there's just no suspense at all. It does sees the arrival
of new CSI Michael Keppler (Grissom left the CSI, for a four
month teaching sabbatical, in the previous episode - although
it's uncertain as to whether he will return). However, there's
more to Keppler than he's letting on - something dark lurks
in his past that threatens to rear its ugly head.
Extras
on this release are non-existent. All we get are episode synopsis
for each episode (why?) and music credits - which is basically
a piece of text, repeated on all three discs, detailing the
various copyright holders for the show's theme tune - nice.
Not only that, but who ever wrote the synopsis for Living
Legend should be given a stiff talking to. It spoils the
entire episode.
Those
moans aside, this is another great collection that any CSI
fan will be proud to own.
