Welcome to the Evergreen Forest... quiet... peaceful... serene.
That is until Bert Racoon wakes up. Luckily he has some good
friends to help him out. Life would be simple in the forest
except for Cyril Sneer - and his life would be simple except
for the Raccoons...
The
Raccoons: Season One contains
all eleven episodes from the show's first season. The animated
show originally ran between 1985 to 1992 and was a joint Canadian/Mexican
production.
Set
in the Evergreen Forest, the show featured the adventures
of Bert Raccoon and his raccoon friends Ralph and Melissa.
They are also friends with an Aardvark called Cedric, whose
father - Cyril Sneer - is obsessed with the accumulation of
wealth.
Each episode sees Bert and his friends embark on an adventure,
which usually sees them crossing paths with Cyril and his
three pig henchmen.
Highlights
in this collection include:
Going
it Alone: When Ralph and Melissa accuse Bert of being
a bit of a hanger-on and not being able to do anything by
himself, he decides to prove them wrong. He makes it his goal
to climb Evergreen Mountain - in the full knowledge that a
monster lives at the highest point.
Buried
Treasure: Bert finds a treasure map and sets out with
Cedric and Broo to find where the hidden treasure is buried.
They build a pirate ship and head off in search of gold, but
it's not long before Cyril finds out what they are up to and
decides he want to find the treasure first.
The
Intruders: Cedric and Ralph become trapped in Cyril's
new vault, which was designed to imprison unwanted intruders.
There is no way to open it - they must wait until the pre-programmed
unlocking system is activated. With little food to survive,
it looks like Cedric and Ralph won't survive.
Cry
Wolf: In a desperate attempt to write a story for Ralph's
paper, Bert makes up a few too many wild tales. However, when
he finally uncovers a plot by Cyril to concrete over the Evergreen
Forest no one believes him.
While
the above episodes were my personal favourites, there is something
here for everyone - there isn't really a bad episode amongst
them.
Extras
include Biographies, Create a Scene and Raccoon-ROM-a
(DVD-Rom content). To be honest, although it could just be
me being stupid, but I just didn't understand the point of
the Create a Scene and the DVD-Rom content. There is
no explanation how to use these segments. The Create a
Scene segment should really have been called Watch
a Scene, because all you can do is watch individual frames
of a number of very short scenes. To be honest you can do
this with the whole DVD - simply choice a scene, pause it
and press the frame advance button - so I wasn't sure what
was so special about this extra. The DVD-Rom content also
has no instructions. The wallpaper choices are pretty dull
and I wasn't sure what do do with the PDFs that were included
(they just show sketches and rough versions of scenes). I'm
sure there is some very clever way of using these to make
your own scenes - but it would have been helpful if there
had been some instructions included.
Picture
quality is fine, although I did notice one slight segment
where the picture went a little fizzy.
At
the end of the day you get 11 quality episodes of The Raccoons
for £20. You can't really grumble at that now can you?
