In a world ravaged by ecological disasters and nuclear warfare,
the surviving humans are forced to coexist with their android
servants, AutoReivs, in a huge domed city called Romdo. A
utopian dream where every aspect of life is controlled and
regulated, Romdo is a paradise where feelings have been discarded
and emotions are no longer required. But
this peaceful idyll is threatened by a series of murders believed
to have been committed by berserk robots, sent out of control
after becoming infected with the Cogito Virus, which has made
them aware of their own existence. Tasked with investigating
the murders are Re-l Mayer, a young female inspector from
the Civilian Intelligence Office, and her AutoReiv partner,
Iggy...
Ergo
Proxy is a futuristic, science-fiction suspense thriller
with gothic cyberpunk undertones. Directed by Shuko Murase
(Witch Hunter ROBIN, Samurai Champloo) and scripted
by Dai Sato (Samurai Champloo, Casshern, Ghost In The Shell:
Stand Alone Complex, Cowboy Bebop), Ergo Proxy
comes to DVD having already attracted considerable attention
due to the fact that Radiohead liked it so much they allowed
the producers to use their song "Paranoid Android"
as the show's closing theme.
Re-l
leaves the safety of Romdo in order to bring Vincent back
and clear his name. Leaving the shelter of the city is a test
of courage, but dealing with the realities of life outside
the dome is a test of conviction. The idyllic illusion of
life within Romdo begins to crumble for Re-l and Vincent as
they forge into the darkness that surrounds them and travel
away from the light.
Episodes
on this DVD include:
Tasogare:
The ex-residents of Romdo are starting to fear Vincent's presence
in their settlement - mainly due to the fact that the Romdo
aerial patrols are starting to increase. To calm everyone
down, Hoody lies and tells them that this is a good thing,
as Romdo is preparing to allow them to return. Re-l
Mayer flies into the settlement with every intention of collecting
Vincent, but Hoody stands in her way. He reveals that the
Proxy are not evil and that there is more than one. He also
claims that he knows where they reside. Meanwhile Romdo's
security, having discovered the location of the settlement,
has every intention of wiping every life form off the face
of the earth.
Domecoming:
Some of the surviving settlement members get together to flee
onboard the Rabbit. Vincent turns down a place onboard
as he intends to take the ill - having breathed the outside
atmosphere - Re-l Mayer back to Romdo so that she can be helped.
As they return to Romdo, Raul orders the execution of Vincent.
Meanwhile the Rabbit is attacked. Thankfully someone
on board has a trick up their sleeve.
Re-L124C41+:
Re-l Mayer is still recovering from her ordeal and, having
witnessed the truth about the outside world, she makes the
decision to find out why her grandfather lied about what was
outside the safety of Romdo's walls. Daedalus
shows Re-l the autopsy results of the Proxy. It is revealed
that the Proxy holds the key to humanity's survival.
Shining
Sign: Pino and Vincent are captured by mysterious soldiers
who are currently engaged in a deadly battle against the AutoRievs.
In a bid to turn him to their cause, the soldiers help Vincent
to fix his damaged ship. When
two soldiers are killed, Vincent is accused and imprisoned.
After
the impressive (for an anime release at any rate) extras on
Volume
1, I was very disappointed to see that the
only extra on this disc were a couple of trailers for other
shows.
Still,
that slight moan aside, this DVD contains another four impressive
episodes which pushes the story along nicely.
