Chronicling the work of the Miami-Dade crime investigators,
CSI: Miami is set against the sun, fun and tropics of the
Florida tourist haven. Leading the team is Horatio Caine,
an ex-bomb squad detective who is no stranger to confrontations
with criminals and the underworld...
Season
4 - Part 2 of CSI: Miami includes
the final 13 episodes of Season 4, spread over three
discs. Now, I'm sorry to go on about this time and time again,
but David Caruso's portrayal of Horatio Caine really annoys
me. It's not that he's a particularly bad actor, it's just
that his character is such a total tosser! Really, he is.
Every
episode sets itself up like this: A murder is committed, or
a body found, Caine appears on the crime scene, and just before
the opening credits start he puts his shades on and delivers
a corny line that sounds like he found it in a fortune cookie.
Highlights include:
Fade
Out: A bizarre murder of a South Beach club owner turns
out to be a script where art is imitating life. As Caine and
his team track down the writers of the script more and more
of its content is coming true. This episode has an interesting
false opening - the characters from which reappear in the
later episode Free Fall.
Skeletons:
Horatio's long-time criminal nemesis Walter Resden surfaces
once again, and Caine is determined to finally bring him to
justice while, within the department, a possible pregnancy
has a member of the team on pins and needles. The opening
to this episode is so suggestive I'm surprised that this wasn't
included in all the trailers. We get lots of shots of women
in bikinis playing volleyball - diving for the ball at every
opportunity.
Deviant:
Alexx publicly campaigns against a convicted sex offender
who moves into her neighbourhood, then becomes embroiled in
controversy when the man is murdered soon thereafter. This
episode also sees the start of some really annoying multi
screen montage segments - something that is used in a lot
of the episodes from now onwards. What's annoying about this
is that it's as though someone new has joined the production
team and wants to keep playing with some new software. It
looks awful and is really annoying (mainly because the scene
is made up of different takes, so the actors are never doing
exactly the same thing).
Collision:
What begins as a case of apparent road rage leads the CSI
team to the investigation of a stolen $4 million necklace,
which is tied to the murder of the jewellery store employee
who might have stolen it. This is a great episode with only
one minor drawback. When the first suspect eventually admits
to ramming the woman's car off the road it's taken as read
that he didn't also kill her. I mean, what are the chances
that one guy would force her off the road and another one
would kill her? Even though that's what happens, it stretches
credibility a little too far.
Driven:
A band of masked gunmen invade an upscale spa, with the female
customers' luxury cars as their booty; Marisol Delko, a customer
at the spa, is injured in the melee, during which a customer
is shot. Poor old Marisol Delko. She's got a terminal illness,
been busted for possession of marijuana, started dating someone
who she really shouldn't (Caine) and is a witness to this
crime. Mind you by the end of this season things get a lot
worse for the poor girl.
Free
Fall: The bodies of two men, shot execution-style, are
discovered in an abandoned hotel slated for demolition. The
team's investigation ties the men to a huge money-laundering
scheme... and to a young couple of anti-heroes basking in
the spotlight of notoriety.
Open
Water: While investigating the disappearance of a cruise
ship passenger, the team discovers that a murder has also
taken place on the ship. Horatio is targeted for investigation
by the FBI, and Marisol is questioned.
Rampage:
The CSI Team is on high alert when the deadly Mala Noche gang
initiates a shooting rampage during the trial of one of their
members. Horatio is targeted for assassination by the gang;
Eric Delko and Marisol Delko Caine are shot at. Eric and his
latest ex are stalked by his psychopathic former girlfriend.
If you can ignore the silly shooter coincidence, then this
episode is entertaining (I mean, what are the chance that
two assassins decide to book rooms in the same hotel in order
to shoot at the Delkos at the same time?)
One
of Our Own: Horatio and Delko's search for Antonio Riaz
continues. The Feds take over the lab and investigate each
team member when $12,000 goes missing from a drug bust. The
department mole is revealed, and Horatio discovers Marisol
spent time with Riaz before they were married.
Extras
include The Concept, Script And Pre-Production of CSI:
Miami (19 minute featurette); The Production Of CSI:
Miami (14 minute featurette); and The Post-Production
Of CSI: Miami (11 minute featurette). All of these extras
are really one long look behind the scenes on the show - just
broken into smaller chunks.
There
are plenty of juicy murders and mysteries for you to get your
teeth into. However, maybe the biggest mystery is why Alexx
insists on turning up to crime scenes in a cream suit. You
can't get that blood out you know!
The
conclusion to the show's fourth season is pretty impressive
too - not what I was expecting. Delko does something unprofessional
(but you can't really blame him).
