In medieval times a man lives or dies by the sword. Our story
opens with the arrival of The Black Swordsman who rescues
a bar girl from the castle guards, soon the inn is reduced
to blood gore and violence. He is Guts, a man born of his
dead mother's womb and taught to fight for everything. He
joins the ranks of the Band of the Hawk, but their success
will lead him to a dark place in his soul...
                  The
second disc in this series contains episodes six to nine of
this dark, medieval, fantasy. The script still remains the
main reason to watch the show as, at best, the animation can
only be classed as bloody, but below average. There are too
many instances where the shot contains little or no movement,
which give the show a very cheap feeling.
                  In
the following four episodes, Griffith and his men attack a
castle only to discover that it contains a demon. Although
the Hawks Raiders are victorious the cost is terribly high,
and only ends when the demon recognises Griffith's charm.
He laughingly informs Guts that he and Griffith will betray
each other. On their return to Midland, they get a mixed reception,
Griffith is the toast of the court, but Guts sees another
side of things, the jealousy of a man raised above his station.
Not only that, Guts has to contend with dissension in the
Hawks ranks. Griffith starts a dangerous friendship with the
king's daughter, Charlotte, which only inflames the nobility
further. Replenished and rested, the Hawks are sent on another
mission against Midlands main rival Chuder, but his success
and friendship with Charlotte leads Yurius to plan his assassination.
                  The
show is presented in its original 4:3 aspect ratio with choice
of English or Japanese sound tracks, with optional subtitles.
For extras you get production sketches, an art gallery, a
trailer and the outtakes which are portions of the show with
                    alternative dialogue.
                  The
outtakes are particularly amusing, especially as there are
some differences between the use of the English language between
us Brits and our American cousins. Most are amusing in their
own way but the one where the character turns around and asks
his troops which one of them is going to jerk him off, means
something all together different in the UK, I'm pretty sure
there will be a few embarrassed questions being answered in
a few households over that one.
                  So,
a show most defiantly to watch for the story rather than the
                    animation.
