Recreate the epic history of Spartans, Persians and Egyptians in three vast campaigns. Fight for Supremacy in the Eastern Mediterranean, using each nation's strategic advantage. Instruct you workers to gather resources while you upgrade your defences with manned city walls, build siege weapons, cavalry and even battleships...

Ancient Wars: Sparta follows a storyline based on realistic historical settings around 500 to 450 B.C. You can play as one of three different nations (Spartans, Persians and Egyptians) in your bid to conquer the ancient world. Command armies with a huge variety of units, ships, chariots and siege weapons. Arm your warriors yourself from a vast choice of weapons including those captured from slain enemies.

The Spartans, Persians and Egyptians are fighting for influence around Asia Minor, Europe and North Africa. Following historical events, the action takes place with different campaigns for all three races. Sparta represents 3D strategy in real time with the newly developed Ancient Wars Engine (AWE), where the player can use each nation's powers in a bid to beat the other nations and build up a dominant culture and civilisation.

You can strategically equip soldiers with weapons of choice. For example, your warriors can be equipped with weapons and shields, they can also be put on horses or on chariots and be given special abilities. And in the height of battle if you see a discarded weapon you can also pick that up and use it too.

Possibly the biggest headache in this game is the amount of time it actually takes to build anything. Sitting around twiddling your thumbs may be some peoples idea of fun, but a little more speed would have been welcomed.

Another problem is that it doesn't really matter which side you decide to fight on - it's pretty much the same experience. While each nation has their own strength when it comes to attack (as well as specialised weapons) that's pretty much it. There's not a whole lot of strategy involved in fighting either. If you are losing a battle your best bet is to send more troops in or retreat - not exactly rocket science.

If you are a huge RTS fanatic then this game is worth a look. Otherwise this game is not for you.
