Mike Myers stars as the mystical, magnetic yet ever-so-mischievous Guru Pitka, who seeks only peace, enlightenment and national television coverage. When Pitka is engaged to use his ancient spiritual wisdom to fix a 21st Century celebrity romance, his karma runs headlong into comedy... The Love Guru could spell the end of Mike Myers's career. This tries to be like an Austin Powers movie (which let's face it, was only funny because it had the Bond movies to draw from) but without the redeeming feature of any jokes that work. Myers's Guru Pitka just comes across as an amalgamation of Dr Evil and Austin Powers, giving ammunition to all those critics who have stated in the past that Myers has a limited range. His boyish, charm is also wearing thin. There's only so many times he can make lame innuendos and look cheekily into the lens. When he grins, you can almost hear him saying: "Like me! Please!" The idea behind the entire movie may have worked as a five minute sketch, or a small cameo character in another movie, but as a character to base an entire movie on this doesn't work at all. Extras include Mike Myers and The Love Guru - An Inside Look (9 min, 13 sec behind the scenes featurette); One Helluva Elephant (5 min, 31 sec look at the animatronic elephant and ostrich designed for the movie); Hockey Training For Actors (6 min, 43 sec look at how Romany Malco and Justin Timberlake were trained up for their hockey scenes); Deleted and Extended Scenes (13 min, 11 sec); Bloopers (3 min, 40 sec of not very funny bloopers); Back in The Booth with Trent and Jay (4 min, 57 sec of additional dialogue with Trent and Jay); Outtakes & More (9 min, 49 sec of more outtakes); and Theatrical Trailer (2 min, 27 sec). A truly painful experience. One of the worst movies I've ever seen! 1 Darren Rea |
