Music ReviewBukola started out exploring her own voice with the deep rough soulful tones of Repeat Ophenda and in 2003 Bukola teamed up with D’syfa and the two began writing songs together. As they worked closely they evolved and grew together, constantly bouncing off each other’s ideas, talent, refining their skills and learning new ones along the way. Which Way is Bukola’s debut album full of diversity, originality and exotic sounds. When Bukola sings, her voice is angelic, light and soulful yet when it comes to rapping her voice becomes stronger, grittier and more real. This just shows how diverse an artist Bukola is. It’s good to hear the exotic sounds carried through in her music but also to have the conflicting sound of Bukola’s London accent come through in her rapping too, this keeps it real. With tracks on this album featuring JR, M.A.D and Honest, we can see how well Bukola works with different artists. I especially liked tracks 6 'To whom it May Concern' and 11 'Know about Love' both feat. JR. There is a definite passion coming off Bukola when she is singing/rapping with other people and this can be felt throughout her tracks she has artists featuring on. My favourite track on the album is 7 'Getting Down'. This is an upbeat, sophisticated tune, which includes Bukola both singing and rapping. Listening to this tune takes me to summer days feeling the heat from the barbeque with friends and family. Each track is different from the last and it is so refreshing to find this on an album these days rather than having a repetitive album sounding the same all the way through. Bukola has spirit; fire, passion and soul from rapping to hip hop styling and soul singing She has a diversity and charm that will take her a long way in the music world. I look forward to her second album, which is scheduled for release in spring this year (2009). 9 Helena Rea |
