Mega-City One's chief lawman has been effected by a new disease
known as Mad Judge Disease and goes on a rampage through the
city. While the rest of the Judges are intent on tracking
Dredd down and bringing him to justice, a mysterious group
of underground criminals, known as The Friends, want him to
join their cause.
Wanted:
Dredd or Alive is
the first Big Finish audio to feature characters from the
pages of 2000AD. Set in 2124 the gritty action is well
interspersed with comical segments which are delivered in
the style of a radio link show.
Fans
of the original comic series will feel right at home straight
away and there are brief appearances by Dredd's chief nark,
Max Normal, and Judge Hershey.
The
story is thick and fast, but by its conclusion you may feel
a little cheated. I felt as though I'd just been delivered
that all too familiar punchline... "and it was all a
dream" style of get out ending. While the ending itself
is not exactly original, getting there is extremely eventful.
There
are bound to be comparisons made between this and the Judge
Dredd audio productions created by Dirk Maggs in 1995.
In truth, I found Big Finish's interpretation a lot easier
to swallow. Sure, Maggs' series has more effects and better
production values, but I found the Big Finnish story more
engaging.
If
this is the shape of things to come, then I am really looking
forward to seeing how this very promising series develops.
