Twelve episodes plus a one-off teaser - The Daleks'
Master Plan was a monster. Probably the ultimate folly
of the Hartnell years, the story somehow manages to maintain
an epic quality while remaining firmly grounded in soap opera
drama. But make no mistake, the story is a masterpiece.
Better
still, the audio restoration and linking voice-over, read
by Peter Purves, are nothing short of fantastic which helps
to recreate some of the original charm of the story first
broadcast in late 1965.
But
unlike previous BBC audio releases of Dr Who stories
these CDs contain a little something extra. The first disc,
Mission to the Unknown, also holds MP3 files of each
episode without the linking narrative as well as some 'before
and after' snatches of audio showing how the off-air tapes
were cleaned up for this release. A simply fantastic feat
of audio engineering by restorer Mark Ayres.
The
CD release of The Daleks' Master Plan is nothing short
of magnificent - go buy it now.
