Alone
in a violent universe, her only companions barbaric aliens,
Enterprise's
science officer T'pol has gone astray. The ultimate proof:
her deadly reflex reaction to a threat to her human comrades.
Has she betrayed her non-violent Vulcan heritage? Or must
the teachings of Surak be abandoned when the needs of the
many outweigh the needs of the few?...
Surak's
Soul examines
the grey area of human preservation. The novel asks the question
whether or not an entire race should be killed in order to
preserve another. Not an easy decision to make when talking
about two alien races, but when the race threatened with extinction
could be humanity then surely that choice is simple. Or is
it? With the Borg, this was a straight forward question to
answer, but what if the race destroying Earth are not aware
that they are doing any wrong?
There
are some interesting parallels drawn between a great Vulcan
teacher and Earth's Gandhi and some of this great mans teachings
are used as examples throughout the text.
While
the conclusion is a little on the rushed side this is still
a solid, readable story. An
above average read from what is turning out to be an impressive
collection of stories based on the Enterprise cast
and crew.
