After
seven long years in the Delta Quadrant, the crew of the Starship
Voyager must now confront the strangest world off all:
home. While the return means reunions with long-lost loved
ones, for some, such as the Doctor and Seven of Nine, it brings
the added challenge of forging new lives in a Federation that
seems to hold little place for them. But as Janeway and her
crew go their separate ways a mysterious cybernetic plague
strikes Earth, transforming innocent people into a new generation
of Borg, and it looks like Voyager may be to blame...
Hurrah!
Thank God this has finally been tackled! I came away from
the final episode of Voyager a little miffed! For seven
long years we had been behind the crew as they fought tooth
and nail to traverse the vast distance from the Delta Quadrant
back to Earth. And what happens in the last episode? "The
Earth! Hooray! We made it! The End - roll credits!"
Now,
thanks to Homecoming, we get to see how the ex-Marquis
members of Voyager integrate back into the Federation;
how Janeway becomes an Admiral (events already revealed in
Nemesis; and how she reacts when reunited with Mark
and his wife.
There
is also something strange about Harry's girlfriend. Why is
she so willing to renew their romantic involvement on Starfleet's
orders? And why is it that Seven of Nine quickly alienates
a crowd who are gathering to welcome her home?
Homecoming
could have been a real dog's dinner if it had been rushed,
but thankfully it is being spread over two novels. The first
builds the tension in just the right way. We want to see the
crew home and settling into their new surroundings, we don't
want to see them rush out on a new adventure like they never
moved on and this helps to add a certain amount of credibility
to the characters and the show we grew to love over seven
years.
If
the second novel is only half as good as this, then it will
still be a must read.
