                    When
an unstoppable Borg plague breaks out on Earth, blame quickly
falls on the newly returned crew of the Starship Voyager.
Did Janeway and her crew unknowingly carry this insidious
infection back with them? Many in Starfleet believe so and
Seven of Nine falls under suspicion. The crew of Voyager
must be reunited in a last-ditch effort to unearth the source
of the contagion in order to save Earth from assimilation
                    from a new Borg collective...
                  The
                    Farther Shore follows
on from the events unravelled in
                    Homecoming
                    - events that any true Voyager fan will be pleased
                    have been tackled properly.
                  While
Seven of Nine continues to be unable to win friends and influence
people, or not as the case may be, Torres tries to get more
in tune with her Klingon side. I loved this little piece of
irony - Seven of Nine tries to fit in with the human race
but can't and Torres tries to subdue her Klingon side but
                    can't.
                  Kim's
past love also continues to string him on in order to help
Starfleet and Data makes an appearance.
                  Probably
the biggest moan is the fact that it is not easy to tell that
this book and the Homecoming novel are part of the
same story. Why Pocket Books didn't use the same title for
both books and add a "part one" and "part two"
addition for each book is a mystery. The covers don't even
look anywhere near alike (One having an artists impression
of Janeway, the other a rather dull and washed-out shot of
Seven of Nine). I know that the cover to The Farther Shore
has "The exciting conclusion to the Homecoming adventure"
plastered over the cover, but if you are looking for the conclusion
in a bookstore you'll probably only see the spines.
                  A
more than satisfying conclusion to the story that is only
really let down by the sloppy presentation of the cover.
