In his scruffy jeans and baggy button-down camp shirt, Joss
Whedon doesn't look much like a Hollywood Mogul. He is soft-spoken
and funny. His lopsided grin makes you think more of the video-store
clerk he once was than the man who created one of the most
beloved television shows of all time.
This is how Candace Havens' book on Joss Whedon begins, showing
that the genius behind the cult hits of Buffy and Angel
is just like us. He's happy to admit this too, and on several
occasions cites himself as a geek writing a show for fellow
geeks.
In this book, Havens takes you through Whedon's early years
and growing up (when he was know as "Joe" to family
and friends). It shows you his influences, particularly his
hatred of high school and how hard it was to fit in. The chapters
are short but entertaining, taking you into the mind of Whedon,
plus a scattering of inserts including a set tour of Buffy,
Angel and Firefly, plus an exclusive interview
with Whedon on the Buffy finale.
More
of a book for the real Buffy/Whedon fan rather than
a fun little story for all, but it'll make you chuckle at
his wit, and it won't take up too much of your time to read
if you'd like to find out a little more about the creator
and the beginnings of Buffy et al. His quote on the
back of the book says: "Possibly the finest book of the century.
It's exactly like A Tale of Two Cities, but with 30%
more me." You gotta love him!
