The
year is 2298 and five years after the presumed death of Captain
James T. Kirk, the USS
Excelsior,
commanded by captain Hikaru Sulu, is at the forefront of exploration,
diplomacy, and the defence of the Federation. Unprecedented
peace talks with the xenophobic Tholian Assembly trigger a
deadly confrontation. Now Sulu and his crew are thrust into
an unexpected conflict between the Tholians and a mysterious
new enemy, the Neyel... whose origins, if revealed, could
lead to war with Earth itself...
The
Sundered is
both well written and entertaining, which is a good start.
It also sees Sulu wrestling with his conscience as he struggles
to do the right thing. This book illustrates what an excellent
captain Sulu would have made - dare I say to equal Kirk?
This book is also the first in a new series of books entitled
The Lost Era, that charts the 70 years between Captain
Kirk's disappearance and the beginning of The Next Generation.
This story takes place aboard Sulu's ship and it's good to
see Chekov,
Rand, Chapel and Tuvok among his crew.
The
Tholian threat is good, solid stuff and as Sulu takes the
Excelsior into the thick of the action you can almost
hear the klaxon sound for red alert.
If
the rest of the series is written with as much passion and
attention to detail then Pocket Books will have yet another
great Star Trek line to add to its already impressive
collection.
