1997 saw the introduction of Star
Trek: New Frontier
range which chronicled the adventures of Captain Mackenzie
Calhoun and the USS
Excalibur.
Now, over a dozen books later the series' originator, Peter
David, gathers a number of established Star
Trek
authors to tell new tales of the crew of the Excalibur...
No
Limits
is really only going to appeal to fans of the original New
Frontier range. And now that The Lost Era series
seems to have started developing subplots and scenarios that
New Frontier series really should have been tackling
this collection is too little too late.
While
this collection is, on the whole, written by some of the best
Trek authors working today, there is very little here
that you can imagine being anything other than b-plot material
elsewhere. Susan Shwartz's story, which brings in Ambassador
Spock, is probably the best of the bunch. But there are some
dull inclusions including a meeting with the Q - Yawn! Sorry
but I'm not a huge fan of the Q in any capacity. Also there
is a rather predictable Borg story. Borg! Borg! Borg! Is anyone
else sick of them? No? Just me then. Sorry, but it just seems
that whenever anyone in Trek-dom wants to push the buttons
they bring out the Borg!
However,
Peter David does make a welcome contribution called A Little
Gateway which concerns Calhoun and Shelby's honeymoon
on Xenex.
Personally
I have never been a huge fan of short stories, but short stories
of a Trek franchise that I never really got to know
as well as I should have is not my idea of a good read. There
are some interesting additions, but not enough to make me
want to buy this collection.
