Spike is looking for a perfect gift for Dru's anniversary
of her resurrection as a vampire. She really wants Freya's
Strand, a necklace that gives the wearer the ability to shapeshift.
Spike finds the demon that has it - Skrymir, a demon older
than time itself - who he is willing to make a trade. In return
for the necklace Spike and Dru must infiltrate the Watchers
council and get the list of Slayers in waiting. Then they
must travel the world and destroy them all, stopping the council
from being able to call a slayer, and therefore stopping the
thorn in all their sides...
Pretty
maids is a brilliant book, written by the best author
of Buffy fiction - Christopher Golden. It seems the
man knows the buffy-verse inside out and you can picture
the characters in your head acting just as he tells it. The
story is gripping and there is never a dull moment as you
gun for the couple to complete the task, but feel sorry for
the growing number of slayers in waiting who die by their
hands.
We
get to see the story from many angles, the vampires, the girls,
as well as the slayer and her watcher who are racing to the
girls with the hope of reaching them before the demons.
The
climax to the story is also amazing, imagine all these characters
put together in the Watchers Council in a fight to the death.
In the end you know that Spike and Dru wont die, but you also
see them have to give up on getting the necklace. An army
of Skrymir's demons attack, facing the 12 or so slayers in
waiting which escaped to the council. The slayer is killed
in the battle and so one of the girls becomes the slayer -
but which one, and will she stop the attack before more innocents
are killed? - I wont tell you, because you really want to
sit down and read this yourself!
