| Nazis, Harpies and Vampires are in a day's work for Hellboy,
the world's greatest paranormal investigator. Our
hard-punching hero, the twisted firestarter Liz Sherman, fish-man
Abe Sapien come face to face with a cast of demons, devils
and worse as they battle their way through a ruined Romanian
castle. Hellboy is about to become the unwitting centre of
a vast and deadly plot, a plot that hinges on his shady origins...
 Wake
the Devil is by far the greatest Hellboy graphic novel
to date. Instead of a collection of short stories, this collection
is a complete story arc that delves into the seedy underworld
of the Nazi's evil past and Hitler's strange obsession with
                    the occult. As
is common with these graphic novels, Mignola has included
some additional material that was not present in the original
series. This time around he has included an epilogue which
was especially constructed for this release. Mignola
is a genius. His warped writing and illustrations set the
Hellboy series head and shoulders above anything else
that has emerged from the comic market for some time. His
clever use of folklore and Nazi myth help to keep the reader
guessing at how much is based on real folklore and how much
is conjured up from Mignola's twisted mind. If
you have outgrown the sycophantic Superman, are bored of sulky
old Batman and could never fathom what the hell the JLA were
all about anyway then you have grown up and it is time to
                    move onto Hellboy. Darren
