A gang of teenagers are committing crimes in Gotham City in the name of their leader, The Mutant. After a number of years in retirement Bruce Wayne decides that the world needs the Batman again to bring order to the streets. However, he is being reborn in an age that frowns upon vigilantes and superheroes. The cost to Wayne will be high and as the powers that be line up to destroy him he soon realises how high that cost is...

The Dark Knight Returns was originally released in the mid-eighties and was an instant success. It's not hard to see why. Frank Miller's tale turns the realm of comic book heroes on its head. Superheroes are, mostly, a thing of the past and when Batman rears his head again the USA government send Superman out to destroy him. Once fighting side by side as members if the Justice League of America, the two superheroes are pitted against each other in a fight to the death.

Titan's new edition of an old classic is beautifully reproduced in hardback with reprints of some of Miller's original scripts and concept sketches. This graphic novel has been reissued to fit in with a similar design to last months release of The Dark Knight Strikes Again. While I understand that, what I can't quite fathom is why this collection is considerably smaller in page count, yet demands an additional £5 in price.

If you don't already own a copy of this then you really should treat yourself. One of the greatest graphic novels of all time - still as ground breaking and beautiful today as it was back in the 80s.
