                    In
the summer of 2002, a plague of unknown origin destroyed every
last sperm, foetus, and fully developed mammal with a Y chromosome
                    - in other words, no more male of any species - with the exception
of amateur escapologist Yorick Brown and his male pet monkey
Ampersand. With his unique status, Yorick must undertake a
continent spanning quest to find his missing girlfriend and
one true love, an exchange student stranded in Australia.
Along the way he meets a variety of women, each with their
own agenda for him. Will the benefits of being the last man
                    alive outweigh the costs?...
                  Unmanned
                    is
an intriguing concept for a graphic novel. Surely every sad
anoraky male has dreamt that they were the last male on the
planet and at the mercy of every woman's fantasies? I know
I have! [Oops, must remember to delete that]. Alas, poor Yorick
[look a reference to Shakespeare to show I am mildly cultured]
gets to do just that, but the fantasy isn't quite as sweet
when it is turned into a reality.
                  Now
Yorick must avoid the different social groups emerging in
a new era. There are factions out there that want him to repopulate
the world, using them as the vessels and then there are groups
out there that want him dead, even though this will mean the
end of the human race. One group, know as Amazons, are staunch
men haters and, to show their individuality,
have all burnt one breast off.

                    K. Vaughan's script is gripping from the start and it is uncanny
the way he manipulates the reader around to his way of thinking.
As soon as I saw Yorick's monkey, Ampersand, I was immediately
reminded of the Nazi monkey in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Pages later Vaughan's script proves he was already there,
                    way ahead of me.

to the comic format for some time.
