When a mysterious artifact arrives at Chicago's natural
history museum things start to go wrong. The ship that originally
carried the item from its native homeland is found at sea
with its crew decapitated. And when the same fate starts to
befall members of staff at the museum you realise this is
no DIsney movie you are watching...
The
Relic
was one of those movies that I never got around to seeing
on its cinematic release and now, after watching the DVD,
I wish I had. This works wonderfully on the small screen,
but it really needs a cinema setting to do it justice.
It
starts off pretty run-of-the-mill and builds towards a climax
with enough scary moments to keep even the hardest of horror
nuts on the edge of their seats. I have not jumped at a movie
for ages, but I am ashamed to admit that I jumped so many
times at some of the most cliched settings (for example there
is a scene were a cat jumps out of some crates. Name a horror
film where that hasn't been used.)
And
the movie has one mother of a beast at its centre. The monsters
from Aliens, Predator and Terminator
all look like kittens compared to this mother - one of Stan
Winston's greatest, and scariest creations.
The
disc itself lets itself down in the extras department with
only a trailer to keep you happy.
This
is one of the best horror/sci-fi movies I have seen for a
long time. While there is nothing original here it is still
a damn fine movie.
