Police Sergeant Howie (Edward Woodward) is sent to a remote island off the coast of Scotland to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a young girl. The locals claim to have no idea who the young girl was until Howie digs deeper and uncovers a secret cult. Howie must put an end to the locals warped practices before they kill again...

This is the first time The Wicker Man has been released on DVD in the UK and fans of the original are in for a treat. Originally released in 1973 this movie has dated well. Despite the horrendous 1970s fashion and music the story at its heart is as fresh today as it was nearly 30 years ago. The print has been scrubbed up nicely and there is even a 5.1 mix of the soundtrack.

The movie's final 20 minutes represent one of the best horror films endings - the villagers singing and swaying is childlike in its simplicity and it is this which helps to ensure the desired horrific effect.

This disc is awash with extras including a 35 minute documentary and 25 minute interview with Christopher Lee (a very bad print from the 70s) as well as a 15 minute longer director's cut on the second disc - although be warned the extra footage is of noticeably poorer quality than the rest of the movie. The Director's cut starts back on the mainland and gives us more of an insight into what makes Howie tick. It builds up his religious background a little more strongly so that we see why the unraveling events shock him from the start - for example, when he freaks out during the landlord's daughter sing-song.

If you are a horror fan then this is a must for your collection. Easily one of the greatest British horror movies of all time.
