The death of a girl found in the car park of the Fox & Castle
pub, on the Woodstock Road presents a puzzle for Chief Inspector
Morse. Morse retrieves a letter from the dead girl's purse
which leads him to the Allgate Insurance Company and a tangled
web of hidden passion and corruption coupled with extracurricular
'goings on' at the college, Morse and Lewis have plenty of
suspects, but who is behind the murder?...
Last
Bus to Woodstock features a couple of appearances from
actors who later went on to become familiar soap stars. Mrs
Cain is played be a young Shirley Stelfox who would later
go on to play Edna Birch in Emmerdale and is a supporting
role from Perry Fenwick, who would later play Billy in Eastenders.
In
this episode we get to see a little more of forensic scientist
Max, whose relatives may have something to do with the events.
The
plot is full of twists to keep you guessing until the last
minute.
The
disc also includes a very short photo gallery - only 8 photos
of the cast and set.
Some
valuable erotic paintings are stolen from the stately home
of Sir Julius Hanbury. When Lord Hanbury mysteriously disappears,
Morse and Lewis uncover an elaborate scheme to conceal his
death. Morse and Lewis are required to delve into the lives
and minds of the aristocracy to try to solve this baffling
case...
The
Ghost in the Machine stars the wonderful Patricia Hodge
as Lady Hanbury. There is an amusing scene in the opening
chapter which has Lewis making several references to Andrew
Lloyd Webber's Cats which gets a curt and cutting reply
from Morse. This comedy double act routine gets stronger throughout
this episode with Lewis getting the upper hand at least once.
This
episode is well paced and will keep even the most determined
amateur sleuth guessing until the end. A well above average
episode.
The
disc also includes a photo gallery with 15 photographs taken
on location of the cast, but I was at a loss as to why someone
was trying to stick a giant lolly pop up John Thaw's nose
- not the best chosen picture.
