A
ship crashes into Brooklyn harbour, its entire crew are dead
except for a stowaway who is capable of turning into any creature.
This is the last Vampire alive and he has descended on Brooklyn
to track down a woman who is the offspring of a vampire and
a human woman. This half breed is unaware of her destiny and
the last vampire intends to convert her in order to ensure
the future of his race...
The
start of Vampire in Brooklyn sets the scene well as
what is described in the movie as a Blackula movie
based on Bram Stoker's popular Dracula story.
Like
Murphy's The Nutty Professor, he plays more than one
character which helps to add some much needed comedic qualities,
as does Kadeem Hardison as Murphy's servant whose body parts
keep falling off as he slowly rots. There
are cameo appearances from The X-Files' Mitch Pilegi
and Jerry Hall, both of whom don't live for very long.
But
the movie is slow and, in places, painful to watch. It brings
nothing new to the countless vampire movies that have already
been made. It isn't serious enough to be considered a horror
movie and there are not enough laughs to consider it as a
comedy. It seems to float, uncomfortably, between the two.
Vampire
in Brooklyn
has been a long time coming to DVD and you'd be forgiven for
expecting a little more for your money. The only extra that
is worth mentioning is a trailer.
A
below par comedy/horror which sees Murphy at his worst.
