The bizarre death of a popular English novelist in Italy,
the unusual behaviour of her husband and the fact that a certain
Russel Clarke is involved is enough for Strange to send Morse
and Lewis off to Vicenza to investigate. The Italian verdict
is accidental death, but a British inquest questions the decision
and it's up to Morse and Lewis to uncover the truth...
The
death of the Self is set in the beautiful countryside
of Vicenza and the historic Verona. Unlike the Promised
Land, set in Australia, this time Morse looks quite content
whilst it is Lewis who is wishing he was back in England so
that he can compete in his sons sports day.
There
is an amusing scene when Morse and Lewis arrive at Vicenza
station. They are met by an Italian holding up a sign bearing
the words "Moose and Lewis".
Morse
seems to spend most of his time arguing with the Italian Police,
but does manage to get kissed by two different women and his
romance with Nicole looks promising.
Frances
Barber who plays Nicola Burgess obviously didn't take her
Factor 25 on location judging by the sun burn and peeling
skin clearly seen in the scene at her villa.
Extras
include photo gallery which does include some stunning photography
of the Italian countryside and the amphitheatre at Verona.
An
excellent episode.
Crooked
eighties entrepreneurs Bailey, Thornton and Cryer are all
serving sentences in Farnleigh Prison. Cryer is discovered
dead in his cell and Morse and Lewis are called in to discover
how he died. The
prison has a woman governor who appears to be hiding something
and a face from the past helps Morse solve the case...
Absolute
Conviction sees Morse's obvious uncomfortableness with
prisons, he explains to the governor that he spends most of
his time sending people there but has never seen any good
come out of them.
A
eager young Cheatham is treading on Lewis's toes as Morse
struggles to find any evidence.
There
is a memorable scene when Morse and Lewis spot Charlie Bennett
out of prison and chase after him, the music stops abruptly
as Morse falls over a pile of boxes, he looks up to see Charlie
who he hasn't seen for 16 years.
There
are some excellent guest stars including Richard Wilson, Sean
Bean, Sue Johnston and Jim Broadbent. British acting at it's
best.
